BOOKS from MYTHWORKS Myths are replete with sacred and magic books as well as stories about the written word. Cultures that have writing usually attribute that skill as a gift from a teacher god who came from afar, taught the people to read and write and then usually moved on, a visiting professor of sorts. Sometimes, rather than teaching them how to write, the gods gift people with ready-made books or dictate directly to them. Many books explain the origins of the world, like the ancient Sanskrit writings of the Hindu Vedas, and the Judeo-Christian Bible. Most so-called "religions of the book" tend to claim their tome is of divine origin and tend to deny credence to anyone else's; often to the point of violence. Some religions say a person's actions are recorded in heavenly books or scrolls that serve as accounting devices to assign people to perdition or paradise. Then there are guidebooks for the afterlife like the Egyptian and Tibetan Books of the Dead that give handy hints on which paths to take, what foods to avoid, and how to communicate with the natives. Grimoires are books of magic spells and rituals. These books tend to have lives of their own and have been said to fly, speak, kill, and/or create. Whether chiseled in stone, painted on papyrus, or Xeroxed at the local copy store, books are fabulous devices for preserving and passing on information and inspiration.
