CLOTHES MAKE THE MYTH...AND MORE. Whether it was the Greek goddess Athena disguising herself as an old fisherman to impart vital information to Odysseus just before he came home to Ithaca from the Trojan War, or the hero Achilles dressing as a woman and hiding out in a harem to avoid being drafted into that Trojan War, the way one presents oneself to the world greatly influences how the world responds. Goddesses and emperors often dressed in mufti to move among the regular people on intelligence-gathering missions. Many professions have special clothing, such as warriors and priests. Various events are enhanced by certain styles, such as fancy dress for fancy occasions and sports attire for vigorous activities. How much better behaved are children all dressed up than children in grubby garb? How about the old saying that a new outfit will perk you right up? And how much more romantic do you feel in something more sensual than your gardening clothes? Governments have entire bureaucracies devoted to protocol. Before it was outlawed, a challenge to a duel used to be delivered by a slap with a pair of good kid gloves, preferably grey. I have a theory that the decline and fall of many American mega-businesses is due to Casual Friday. Once you start getting casual about clothes in the workplace it isn’t such a leap to get casual about accounting and ethics. In many cultures, how you present yourself is determined by your age and status. Married people wear different hairstyles and clothing than singles and tribal affiliation is enforced via colours and patterns. Just think of the Taliban dress-codes. Rank is signaled by items of clothing, be it the three-piece suit or campaign medals. Rebellion is also signaled by personal style, from tattoos and piercings to exotic hair colours and clothes. The ideal of being civilized and enlightened is not to judge a book by its cover, but an initial response to other people’s style is something everyone automatically does. You’re going to be judged by others based on how you look whether you like it or not. The more conscious you become about the image that you present to the world, the more effective you can become in your interactions with the world.

Pamela has experience in media, the arts, the corporate world, academia, and with international governments and the military. She was a fashion model in her teens and twenties and attended the John Robert Powers school of modeling. Besides her degree in English, Latin and Film from UT Austin, Pamela also has seven years formal study in Comparative Mysticism and is a certified teacher of the Mystery Schools, offering the wisdom of the ancients updated for modern times.

As a model, a speaker and a producer-director, Smith has worked with “image” from both sides of the lens. She has been on a number of national TV and radio shows as a mythology expert, including appearances as spokesperson for Microsoft’s PC game “Age of Mythology” and on the TV series “Forbidden Secrets”, starring Lee Majors.

Besides public speaking, Pamela’s work in organizations includes facilitating meetings and seminars plus doing communications and leadership training. She travels extensively and enjoys learning about other cultures and their mythologies.

As manager of a medical practice, I have struggled with how to create a visual identity, both in terms of our website, and logo/business card/stationery package. What were we trying to communicate that was consistent with the personality of the doctor and our mission?
