Tis all a Chequer-board of Nights and Days
Where Destiny with Men for Pieces plays:
Hither and thither moves, and mates, and slays,
And one by one back in the Closet lays.

What's your game theme:
Warfare? Save the World? Behind Enemy Lines? Build a Civilization? Become a Hero?
No matter what your story-line, there are myths and legends as well as historical examples that can enrich your games. When you plug into these timeless themes and archetypes your players will respond to that resonance hard-wired into the human consciousness -- that's the mechanism of how myths work and stay so alive over the centuries.
Some examples --
Warfare: The conflict between ancient Greek city-states Sparta and Athens lasted twenty-seven years. It was likened to a battle between an elephant (the Spartan army) and a whale (the Athenian navy).
Save the World: Titan hero Prometheus defied his upper-class god rules and faced serious opposition to bring much-needed fire to the lower-class poor humans.
Behind Enemy Lines: Greek warrior-poet Xenophon's real-life adventures to escape from the disastrous Battle of Cunaxa in 401 BCE became a classic book and inspired the 1976 Walter Hill movie Warriors.
Build a Civilization: Every culture has a rich mythology to explain their existence and justify their actions. Usually they descend from gods and have orders to wipe out other peoples, take over the land, and prosper. Besides the story of the Trojan Prince Aeneas founding Rome and Japanese royalty descended from the sun goddess, the many other variations are also fascinating sources for story.
Become a Hero: From Moses to King Arthur, from Perseus to Luke Skywalker, when you respond to the Wakeup Call and become your higher self, adventure always ensues. The latest Grand Theft Auto game, San Andreas, reflects this Theme for the hero Carl.
Myths are the distillation, dressing up, and presentation of human dreams and desires. Align your complex story with the many facets of a Mythic Theme and watch it shine!
