dimension to the characters, texture and power to my storytelling. In short, a powerful underfooting, stability and direction to all the creative choices on my project — an essence I would never have had the time or the knowledge to bring to the film myself."

How can MYTHWORKS help you improve your story?
Your MYTHWORKS consultation will --
- Supply a cohesive Thematic Story-line that asks a specific question of the
character, gives him a specific mission, and has him learning a specific lesson by
story's end. This classic story-line will resonate with the power of myth and
capture your viewers with its recognizable theme, while at the same time engaging
them in its own unique twists and turns.
- Supply Mythic Plot Points with specific suggestions on how to adapt the existing
story to them in order to strengthen the development of the hero, to reveal his
process of growth and change, and to discover the colourful unfolding of the
story-line itself.
- Supply Character Profiles using dynamic archetypes adapted to the individuals in
this screenplay. By tapping into the psychological motivations, strengths and
weaknesses, hopes and fears of each character's archetypes they can become even more
vivid and realistic. Each profile also includes such details as typical business
and styles of speech, to help the writer, director and actor's craft each character
into a distinct memorable individual.
- Supply Title suggestions which reflect the theme of the story.
- Supply Symbolic Design elements to enhance the Mythic Theme and the Archetypes.
Can it really make a difference?
Movies which have used myth and been the stronger for it have recognizable
foundations in classic stories that resonate through time and culture. Some
examples with their myth-story include:
- George Lucas's "Star Wars" - Greek heroes Theseus & the Labyrinth and Perseus & the Minotaur, Celtic/Briton King Arthur
- Adrian Lynne's "Fatal Attraction" - Madame Butterfly, also the Cretan princess
Ariadne & Greek hero Theseus who did her wrong
- "Romeo and Juliet", "Shakespeare in Love" - Greek lovers Pyramus & Thisbe
- Academy Award-winning "Titanic" - Ethiopian princess Andromeda rescued from
sacrifice to the sea monster by Greek hero Perseus
- "Das Boot" - Greek hero Jason & Argonauts sailing off on high adventures on their
ship Argo
- "Othello", "Hamlet", "Les Miserables" - all Columbia films directly based on
classics
- John Carpenter's "Escape from New York" - a tightly constructed Descent into the
Underworld ala the Trojan Aeneas, Greek Odysseus, Italian Dante, Englishman Milton,
and many culture's hero into the underworld stories
- Steven Segal and Andy Davis's "Under Siege" - Raising the Dragon, a mythic theme
spanning various levels of psychological focus
- Spielberg's "Raiders of the Lost Ark" - shades of Jason and the Golden Fleece.
Also Spielberg's
- "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" - very obviously Parsival & the Holy Grail
- "The End of the Affair" - the King Arthur-Guinevere-Lancelot triangle, the Greek
Troilus and Cressida story, the opera "Pearl Fishers"
- Kurasawa's "Seven Samurai" - teamwork heroes like Jason and the Argonauts, Aeneas
and his Trojans
Stories which have either not used myth or been mythically "off":
- Disney's "Hercules" - was horribly incomplete and incorrect
- "Lion King" - though a financial success it was mythologically
incomplete. That missing aspect was however well dealt with in the follow-on Video
Premier "Simba's Pride".
- Sony/Columbia's "First Knight" - mythically incorrect relationship dynamics
- "Waterworld" - incomplete myth
- "Escape from L.A." - a mishmash, mythically incomplete and incorrect
- "Temple of Doom" - full of lore and legend, but missed the mythic foundations
and... what a mess
From just these examples listed above it's obvious that aligning your stories with
the classical power of myth and archetypes plugs it into "what works".
By using mythic themes, plot points, archetypes and symbols in your stories you can
power-charge every aspect of your art and craft for creative and commercial success.
